Choosing a Niche with Human Design

I’m sure you’ve heard the word “Niche” more than enough times already at the beginning of your business so far.

And beyond that, there are differing opinions everywhere too on whether you should or shouldn’t niche down.

But here’s the real scoop about Niches:
People think a Niche is a limiting box they need to fit into, but it’s not! It’s actually a way to help yourself get focused and get found by the right people.

And knowing your Human Design type can point you in the right direction.

Before we go any further, your niche could be either the audience you reach, the problem you solve, or both together. It depends on what feels correct for you.

For instance, life coaches can be niched down to a specific audience. The actual problem they solve is more open, while the audience they serve can be specific.

Or vice versa, you could coach anyone who needs help with a specific problem. The problem you solve can be specific while the person receiving the help is more open.

Or even a very specific niche using both sides can be something like teaching postpartum healing yoga to new moms. Again, it depends on what feels correct for you, but overall we’ll talk about which types should be more niched down and which types shouldn’t.

This applies to all types of businesses, like if you want to run a physical product store, a digital goods store, or whatever type of business you desire!

What you do will be enhanced by how you do it. And your type shows you how you best do what you do and how your energy wants to interact with others through you and your business.

Remember that no matter your type or energetic configuration, you’re able to build the business of your dreams and find your own version of success!

Niche by Type

Manifestors

You’re the trailblazer. Putting yourself into a niched audience won’t feel like freedom. While you’re waiting for inspiration, you don’t need to wait to find the right people. They will find you when you’re moving the collective forward! So instead of focusing on making content for your audience, let your niche form around you! Look instead at where you’re innovative. What area feels right for you to be forging ahead? Where do you see things are stagnant? Where do you want to be known for leading the new movement?

Generators

You’re likely going to have something that you’re passionate about from the get-go. Or perhaps you’ve always had a dream to pursue. Or maybe you’ve responded to something that continues to bring you enough variety while remaining the thing you love. Either way, niching down is the area in which you can thrive! Following the examples above, figure out whether you want to niche down in the problem you solve, the audience you help, or both. A specific niche can help you narrow in on what you want to talk about, instead of it feeling limited. And having a focused-goal may be just the thing to help you start creating the content you desire to.

Manifesting Generators

You’re meant to move quickly. It’s likely that you get bored around 18-24 months into a career. You tend to move through the challenges quicker and when there’s nothing exciting left inside a position, you’re ready for something else. Try to remain broader in the niche you choose. Give yourself the room to move and flow when your energy is ready. If you decide to niche down, remember that you have the ability to switch around what you do, and continue to make it fun for yourself!

Projectors

You’re the one who deeply understands systems and deeply sees others. If you continuously move around and don’t master one thing, you may later in life find yourself unfulfilled. You can always switch it up when you truly feel ready, however, give yourself enough time to master what you choose before moving on. You may find that once you master it, you do actually want to continue with it! Again, with the examples above, find the flexibility that works for you whether to choose a specific problem to solve, the audience to help or both. Give yourself enough time for deep periods of rest in between and make it something you do actually enjoy too! Burnout on a niche doesn’t mean that niche is wrong for you, you may just need time to rest and recoup your energy!

Reflectors

Your aura is so open that it’s not meant to fit into one box. You can shift, move, flow, and mold yourself to any situation that needs your attention. Play to this strength. Choose something broad and let yourself be guided where you need to go! Find the people that need your help, find the environments that feel open and exciting to you, and find the niche that feels like home.

Final Thoughts

Remember, Human Design can go much further into niching down than just using your type.

Creating a Business You Love Isn’t Just About What You Do — It’s Also About How You Do It

The untold side of the entrepreneur journey.

When I first started my business, I was lost. I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do to be an entrepreneur.

Luckily, you really only need a skill, knowledge, or experience in an area that’s further along than someone else in the world. Past that, you can create value around it.

For me, that looked like coaching, guiding, mentoring, and helping people navigate the failures I’ve already encountered throughout my own life. And then I spoke as well about my own battle with not fitting in, depression, and feeling like there was no one else like me. So it was a mix of inspirational content, self-help experience, and knowledge sharing.

But even though I knew what I was sharing (which is a feat of it’s own if you’re a new entrepreneur), HOW I was to share it was completely baffling. And even to this day, I can’t say that I figured it out quickly — because I sit here with almost 3 years of entrepreneurship under my belt and I only figured it out after 2 to 2.5.

Quick? No. Painful? Yes. Worth it? You bet.

So here are 3 helpful tips I learned about how entrepreneurship isn’t just about what you do, but also how. And hopefully, I can help save you the time and energy needed to figure this all out.

1. Even when you know what you do, explaining it can be a different beast.

It’s not enough to know what you do, because if you’re on your way to monetizing it, others have to understand it too. So you have to explain it.

I’m not saying you need the perfect elevator pitch (which doesn’t exist in my book), but you do need a handful of ways to say it that make sense.

For instance, not everyone will need the details, and not everyone needs the broad sentence. The difference is who and when you say them.

When your friends and family ask you what you’re doing, be broader (unless you find they’re really interested). This can sound like “I write online about entrepreneurship,” or “I guide people to creating their online business.”

As you can see, those are two general statements that make sense to the general population.

But when you’re in front of your ideal audience, be more specific. Such as “I use Human Design to help new entrepreneurs build an aligned, sustainable business,” or “I help new entrepreneurs build an online business that doesn’t cause burnout using Human Design.”

Both of those help my target audience understand what I truly do. And even then, I’m curating those for this particular platform.

It doesn’t matter what you say, as long as it’s understood. And you can always tweak this when necessary, so don’t spend too much time thinking about it. Get into conversations with your friends and family and just say what resonates in the moment. Over time, you’ll find the words that better describe it and it’ll become a more clear and concise phrase.

2. Past explaining what you do, what way do you want people to find you

This one caused me the most inner turmoil. I didn’t understand what this meant.

I kept hearing other business coaches and gurus saying to “follow your audience.”

That never worked for me. In fact, it was much more draining, exhausting, and caused me burnout (which is why I create content that challenges these streamlined pieces of advice).

It wasn’t until I started listening to my own energy and following where I felt comfortable and free that I saw success. And that took me years to figure out.

So how do you know when you’ve found the place for you?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • How do I feel when creating for this platform?
  • How do I feel after creating for this platform?
  • Do I genuinely enjoy this platform or am I forcing myself to do it?
  • What decision is the more loving decision: to stay on this platform or to leave it?

Don’t just consult your mind on this, feel into your body. How does your energy feel when you think about those questions? (If you know your Human Design Authority, consult that).

The point is, if you don’t love the way you do your day-to-day business actions, you won’t create a business you love. And that’s not fluff, that’s fact.

Keeping the end goal in mind, what kind of business do you want to build? And what support do you want to help you in sustaining it?

I’m not saying to stop doing the things you need to right now, I’m simply bringing the different possibilities to awareness. And if it feels good, continue on with it! If not, consider checking other things out.

3. Where do you feel like you truly thrive?

I started on Youtube, then Instagram, then Facebook, then TikTok, then Medium, then Blogging, then Podcast… and I switched back and forth interchangeably through these at different times trying to figure out what fit me. More so where I felt like I was free to be me.

Don’t knock it until you try it out, because resistance is a great signpost for what to look into. But also, don’t force yourself into a box that you don’t even want to be in.

Youtube was nice, still is. I just don’t want to dedicate my time there right now, though I know I probably will add it in the future again.

TikTok wasn’t my cup of tea, but I don’t mind posting every once in a while when I feel called to.

Video isn’t bad for me, but it also requires more energy from me. And as a Self-Projector in Human Design, I need to conserve my energy more than most people.

Facebook and Instagram were time-zaps for me and made me feel more bitter than anything good. I still have them for when people decide to join my community, but that’s really all I use them for anymore — community.

Now we get into my zones: Podcast, Blogging, Medium. I’m a writer at heart, and I resisted it for many, many years. But as soon as I finally allowed myself to truly test it out, it’s rapidly become my favorite thing to do.

Podcasting is another because it’s my own platform to just speak about my ideas and experiences and find new people like me who are interested in what I’m interested in.

I love being able to share my thoughts both with the written word and the spoken word. And as a Self-Projector in Human Design, that’s very aligned for my energy. (Believe me, if I had known about Human Design sooner I would’ve saved myself some huge headaches!)

These are the places I’ve found that I thrive. And I had to test them all out to see what felt good and how I truly enjoyed sharing my knowledge.

And it will be the same for you.

Final thoughts

Not everything will work for you, but something will.

I constantly say that everyone could be an entrepreneur. And I 10000% believe that to be true. But I also know that not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, and not everyone is willing to put in the work to become an entrepreneur.

Either way, if you have this dream and you’re willing to do it, fail, persevere, and keep going, you will find success with it. Anyone who tells you it isn’t possible to build a business you love hasn’t been able to do it for themselves yet. Don’t let their projections sway you.

People only truly believe what they’ve done themselves. So find small ways to win, take comfort in the small successes, and keep going. Be your own best cheerleader, and cultivate your content consumption like your life depends on it. Spend time reading inspiration, not demotivation. Then put your desire into action. Take the steps. Move forward.

And you’ll inevitably get there, no matter what anyone else says or believes.

On Consistency and Sticking to a Schedule

This is going to be such an unpopular opinion that I almost decided not to write this. However, it’s important for you to know, just in case you’re like me.

Over the last 30 days, I’ve made a schedule for myself.

My goal was to write a blog post every day, even if it turned out to be a shitty post.

My personal daily structure was that I was going to allow myself to freedom to flow through my days, without forcing myself to do anything.

Needless to say, I didn’t write every day. BUT it’s not because of what you might think.

“Laziness”

There’s so much collective pain and conditioning around “Resting” that it’s been labelled as “Laziness” when people take a day off, choose to NOT do something, or are sitting down to take a breather from life.

Now, don’t get me wrong, there’s a line between laziness and resting, but that line isn’t so black and white.

Mainly, speaking in Human Design terms, anyone without a defined motor center needs more rest than others.

And anyone without a defined Ego center doesn’t have access to consistent Willpower and Motivation.

What does that mean?

My experience

Just so we’re both on the same page, I have NO motor centers. And my Ego center is NOT defined.

So when I told myself for the umpteenth time that I was “finally going to be consistent”, I was setting myself up for failure.

Consistency ISN’T in my nature. It’s not a natural thing for my energy.

So though I was able to crank out a few posts at the beginning of the month, gaining a 5 day or so streak, I was so happy and proud of myself!

Then day 7 happened…

And day 8…

On day 9 I posted again.

Then day 10 happened…

Day 11 I posted again.

Day 12 I posted again.

Then radio silence for about a week.

And it wasn’t that I couldn’t sit down and write. I had all the time I needed. I had the availability for it. And it’s not like I was sitting around just watching Netflix.

But the thing was, my energy had moved on.

I was focusing on learning instead.

My energy went from exporting to importing. For no reason other than that’s what felt RIGHT. That’s what came easily to me.

Consistency is an illusion

Honestly, only people with defined Ego centers are the ones that have the energy for consistency. It doesn’t take too much for the Ego center’s motor to be turned into “on” mode.

However, every OTHER center, needs the right conditions.

Inconsistency is labelled as “bad” or “lazy”.

“Sometimes you just gotta push through”.

Insert any other “hustle-mindset” phrases here.

But why do you want to push yourself to do something if in the moment you hate doing it right then and you have no energy to do it?

That feeling of no energy and force is going to show through in your work anyways!

So it’s like you force yourself to do it, only to have THOSE things that you did be the ones you’re needing to re-tweak or re-record or re-write at a different time because you weren’t happy with the end result anyways.

Why not wait for the creative wave to come back around and then you just create as much as you want to and SAVE some for the time when, inevitably, you’ll feel uninspired to do it?

Creativity IS a wave.

And choosing to celebrate the down time is JUST as important as celebrating the UP time.

I didn’t stop writing because I had nothing to say

I stopped writing because what I would’ve said wouldn’t have been as good in THAT moment as if I would’ve waited until the right time.

I have more than a handful of things that I’m doing/learning/creating at any given time.

I’m not a Manifesting Generator (someone who can and is meant to be multitasking). But I have a need for variety.

The difference between us is that I have a list of things to choose from in the moment, and I’m NEVER doing more than one at a time.

There are days I sing and learn French.

Then there are days that I don’t do that but I work on my business.

There are days that I go out.

There are days that I stay in and rest.

I learn in my free time. Brainstorm. Rest myself. And prepare myself for the next wave when my energy comes back.

I find that I create better, faster, more efficiently, and more happily doing all of this.

I never get bored. And even if I did, I know my list to choose from or how to find new things to try out.

And most of all, I don’t get BURNOUT anymore.

Consistency Burnout

Be honest, how many times have you felt burnout?

Now how often is that burnout linked to doing things you didn’t want to do in that moment?

If you haven’t discovered this pattern yet, pay attention the next time you feel burned out!

It’ll likely be because of things you don’t want to do (i.e. don’t have the energy for in that moment!), a collection of moments that you’re forcing yourself to do something you really don’t want to do, or even forcing yourself to do anything.

The ONLY times we get burnout from things we actually ENJOY are when we over-indulge ourselves in them. So perhaps that’s a thing for you too.

But, my point is, pay attention to where your burnout comes from and where it starts. You’ll be surprised!

And guess what?

You have 100% control of your life to CHANGE whatever is causing you burnout.

There are ways around it, ways to uplift you during it, ways to work with it, or even just the good-ol “saying no” works wonders as well.

It’s not “Batching”, it’s “Conserving”

I used to HATE the thought of batching content or batching anything.

But honestly, it’s the bees-knees — WHEN IT’S DONE CORRECTLY.

Again, just like we’re saying no to forcing in the moment, DON’T force yourself to batch.

Follow your energy. Batch during your Ups rather than your Downs.

If you have a creative wave with actually putting out content, create a system to help you automatically do that.

If you need to batch your budgeting or your tasks, do that.

Do whatever your energy leads you to do. Cut the things that aren’t necessary. And prioritize YOU.

My own consistency change

I’ve grown to enjoy my inconsistency.

Why are algorithms more important than my own health? They’re not.

I already know that I will create what I’m meant to create. So then why am I pushing?

There’s no deadline. And with an undefined Root center, I hate deadlines. They don’t help me at all, they just give me unnecessary pressure.

I follow what feels right. What flows right.

And if I need a day of full-relaxation, that’s not a bad thing. That’s SO helpful!

When I’m relaxing, I have some of my BEST ideas.

That’s a trend in my own energy that’s reliable. THAT is MY consistency.

As well as I’m a morning person. I like my mornings, I get a lot done.

It doesn’t matter what I’m getting done, I just get a lot done that I need to that day. That’s also MY consistency.

Just because it doesn’t fit the standards of “normal” consistency, doesn’t mean it’s wrong.

And that goes for you, too.

The Social Platform Shift on the Rise

Are you ready?

Years ago when social media just started, likes, followers and vanity metrics mattered.

But as algorithms keep changing and platform users become accustomed to the platforms, things are shifting.

And personally, I’d rather have 10 followers who engage and connect every time I publish something rather than 10 million that couldn’t care less.

Think about it

If you were to ask your followers for help with getting a message out, who’s more likely to lend a hand?

  • The 10 million followers who don’t see your content or care to read it frequently?

Or

  • The 10 followers who see your content every time you publish and actively engage?

Personally, I’m team 2.

Algorithms are people

I’m not actually saying that an algorithm is a person. However, what do algorithms do?

They were made to help people find content that they enjoy so they stay on the platform longer and see more ads.

Algorithms are based on human behavior.

It’s all a psychology strategy.

Creators of algorithms care about:

  • What you’re interested in right now
  • How you interact easiest
  • What ads should reach you and when
  • How often ads actually work (to determine ad-blindness and shift to accompany that)
  • What happened right before you clicked off
  • When you came back and how long you typically stay on the platform

They’re trying to keep you as interested, engaged, and alert as possible.

So that when you come across something you like, you engage.

When you engage, you’re more likely to see another ad that targets that specific topic or type of content.

And ultimately, they’re leading every person through a path to a sale so they make money.

The problem

The problem is that now we’ve all become accustomed to this working, we’re tired of it. We’re so tired that we’re becoming content-blind.

When you scroll, now it’s more mindless. You engage less. You give less validation to the creators that are only creating to make money and use you.

This isn’t a problem for people, it’s a problem for the algorithm. Because they’re looking for the areas we aren’t blind to yet.

The upcoming solution

Video and audio content.

For years we didn’t have access to video or audio content. We had mainly written and visual.

But now, conversation and connection are key metrics.

Interacting with creators Live, watching a video for a certain amount of time, and listening for a certain amount of time are all the new “vanity” metrics. Because they’re more reliable.

Just like in Email lists, opens are no longer a reliable resource for determining engagement. Why? Because we’re still content-blind.

We read it and forget it. It means nothing to us.

What means more, is more personal interaction.

Personal interaction metrics

Personal interactions are the new best form of making sure people engage.

Like DMs, clicks, commenting, and length of time watched/listened.

As a creator, having more followers doesn’t matter. How engaged they are does.

Having more subscribers doesn’t matter. How engaged they are does.

It used to matter when we were gauging how far of a reach we had. But now, it’s how impactful that reach is.

Final thoughts

If you’re someone who still values followers at face value and is doing follow for follow or like for like, you’re wasting your time, energy, and possibly hurting your own algorithm for the future, too.

Don’t focus on how many followers you have.

Instead, focus on creating content that people actually want to engage with. That you actually enjoy creating (so you don’t burn out). And that creates an impact on the people that engage.

The “Right Way” to Start a Business

Discussing the fast-result and fast-money industry.

Have you seen the courses, downloads, and masterclasses that are directed to starting a business and getting fast results?

They usually say something like “Follow my 4 step process to profit quickly in business!” or “This training is all you need to succeed in business!” etc.

Essentially telling you that a 1-hour to 6-hour training will be everything you need to start a business and get money quickly.

But all of these claims are bullshit. And here’s why.

There is NO “Right Way”

Just like we humans are all at least slightly different in some unique way, there are many, many more ways for each individual person to succeed in business.

That’s math that I can’t even do. 7 Billion people to the thousands, even millions, of ways for each person.

You don’t need the “one way.”

The one way that it worked for them isn’t guaranteed to work for you. Because you’re already a different person. You have completely different reasons, values, talents, skills, preferences, gifts, and so much more.

Not to mention prestige, privilege, starting point, knowledge, location, availability of resources, and all other external factors.

Both your internal experience and external experience are vastly different than the person trying to sell you the way that worked for them.

And both of these will skew the results you create by using their process.

“Fast” and “Quick” are Click-Bait Terms

If you’ve been duped by these terms before, you’re not alone.

These two words are tossed around carelessly and interchangeably. Yet they’re both vague and broad.

Fast could mean you set it up fast. Not that you’ll succeed fast. Or it could mean that you’ll find your first client fast — because the first client is usually someone you know (40% of new business owners have their first client through their network).

Or fast could mean that you learn the knowledge you need… well, fast.

But there’s no given timeframe. And your perception of a fast timeframe could be slow for them. Or vice versa.

Fast in this context, to me as a 3rd-year Entrepreneur, means you’ll be able to start within 1 year and gain your first client within 2 years.

Entrepreneurship isn’t as easy as it seems. There’s a steep learning curve for many, the industry is constantly shifting, there are new things to learn all the time about it.

So, what really does “fast” or “quick” actually mean?

It means the marketing understands your pressure to get results quickly. That’s it. It’s just a marketing tactic.

What really brings fast results?

Action. You taking action to do the thing. To start the business. To post the information. To market yourself. To start at all.

And yes, you’ll learn that within the masterclass, course, or whatever it is. But it still doesn’t mean their process will work for you if you’re left confused on what to do or where to start.

Just as well, overthinking and procrastination slow any progress. Having someone to talk to, bounce ideas off of, and actually consult with can move you forward faster than a course that is just knowledge sitting in your head.

Without action, results don’t come.

So what’s going to get you in motion? How are you going to take a step forward today? What action step will you complete?

Write it down. Then go do it. Take some action so you can start building momentum to receive real results.

We could get into a whole rant about why this is, and the deeper aspects of what’s going on in the fast-result and fast-money industry, but I won’t ramble that out today.

Instead, I want to leave you with actual, viable options if you’re looking to make fast money.

Fast, in this sense, means within a month. Not days, weeks.

The only faster way that I know of is selling things you own. Then, it may be days.

But in terms of business startups and entrepreneurship, I’m going to assume that you don’t want to sell all your stuff.

2 Ways to Make Money Within a Month

Freelancing gives the broadest opportunity to make money while remaining in your zone of genius and being able to continue working on your own business. It’s where you take the skills you already know and can competently complete and offer them to others who need them.

  1. Signup for a Freelancing Platform and Offer Services
    – Fiverr, Upwork, and other similar sites are where the clientele already comes to their platform. So you don’t need to go out looking for clients from scratch.
    – With Fiverr, you set up your profile and then wait for the algorithm to pick you up (usually after 2 weeks) and start showing you on the first page.
    – With Upwork, you set up your profile and then bid on the work that clients have already posted. Think about it as an interview process.
  2. Offer Freelancing to Entrepreneurs You Already Know
    – Established entrepreneurs likely have items they’d like to outsource. Such as emails, social media posts, blog posts, website modification, appointment setting, etc.
    – Offer your services to them and see if they know anyone else who may need the same kind of help.

Remember, there is no “one way” that will work for you.

Your journey is uniquely your own. It won’t be perfect. It won’t be pretty.

It’ll be messy, authentic, vulnerable, easy, and challenging, all in one.

But you’ll be moving forward, figuring it out, and, most of all, it’ll be true to you.

The Biggest Business Shift in History is Here… Will it Stay?

The future versus the past—how to implement these changes for good.

In the past two years, we’ve seen some radical shifts in the business world.

Work from home, virtual conferences, flexibility in scheduling due to sickness, and a whole plethora of smaller changes that before this time in history, haven’t been explored.

And employees don’t want things to “return to normal,” so what’s the deal?

A Return To Normal

What even is normal anymore?

A 5-day workweek, anywhere from 8 am to 6 pm, long commutes to work, and being in the office every day possible.

That’s what normal used to be.

But now that offices have survived almost 2 years in this new setup, some employees hope that there is more flexibility for them going forward.

Whether you’re an introvert that wants to do the job from home, an extrovert who likes to converse with people in the office, or someone in between who wouldn’t mind having a few days in the office and then a few to recharge at home, the shift may work better for everyone if it stays. And here’s why.

Employees Want to Work Smarter, More Efficiently, and Faster — and For Some, That’s at Home

Now, yes, there are some instances with having kids where this statement isn’t always true. But for the majority of people, having to work from home is more motivating because there’s not a supervisor breathing down their necks.

Or there aren’t as many distractions as around the office. There’s the ability to go out and get coffee in the morning. An ability to take lunch when you’re hungry or finish your work early and be done for the day.

The biggest difference is that the workday is not metered by the amount of time spent at the office. It’s metered by the quality of and the completion of tasks or projects.

There’s less “busy work” and more focus on actual things that need to get done.

Remember in school when the teachers used to hand out busy work when there was a substitute in class that day? That’s how the modern-day office environment feels.

And employees are ready for that environment to change.

Focus on what projects and tasks need to get done, rather than just doling out work to them for them to complete because they’re “on the job.” Your employees will appreciate it, the office morale will increase, and they’ll be more inclined to finish their work at a higher quality.

Flexibility Will Win the Employees Quality

If you’ve ever tried to force something to happen in your office, you’ve seen the turnout. It’s angry at best, and unmotivated at worst.

So why, when so many employees have expressed their desires to work from home, are they being ordered back into the office?

Is it simply because the company can’t “keep an eye” on them while they’re working?

If they’re meeting all of their work requirements and producing quality work, why would the company need to continue to “keep an eye” on them?

Bottom line, if you don’t trust your employees to do the job they were hired to do, why are they hired at your office?

Employees appreciate having more flexibility, even if they have to be in the office 2 to 3 days per week because they get to have more time with their families, friends, and for themselves to relax.

And relaxed, happy employees work better.

So what needs to be implemented going forward to hopefully keep this change? If you’re a supervisor, take these next suggestions into account. If you’re an employee, suggest these to your company.

Suggestions to Keep Everyone Happy

Compromise and communication are the keys to solving any disputes. And it’s no longer the company that’s solely ruling over its employees. So let’s look at some possible ways to compromise between the two.

Work in office 2 to 3 days per week, and work from home 2 to 3 days per week

This may work for those who don’t mind coming in still. Plus, talk to your employees, some may actually want to come into the office still. It’s not that everyone wants to stay home all the time, but the option is helpful for those who do.

And if it’s absolutely imperative for employees to be in the office every week, be flexible with how much or how many days or even for what specific projects they’ll need to be in person for.

Have a scheduled meeting every week or every day to start the day

While this option doesn’t cut down on Zoom time, having a meeting in the morning to simply discuss the week or the day’s tasks is helpful. It’s more helpful for the supervisor to talk to everyone directly at once than it is to have 25 different conversations.

Also, you can set times to check-in or at what point’s to send over the day’s work. But during these meetings, make sure they’re being used properly, and not just sitting around wasting everyone’s time. They could get started on their work instead if a meeting isn’t needed.

Have a trial period of work from home

Though the trial has been these past 2 years, some companies are afraid that if workers don’t return to the office, they won’t continue making their quotas. Which is simply a fear, not truth or representation of what really will happen.

Nonetheless, suggesting a trial period of work from home, say 3 to 6 months, and having monthly quality check-ins to see how it’s going can be the bridge. If this trial period goes well, talk about a longer-term arrangement. If it doesn’t, lessen the time at home. But be honest — on both sides — about what’s working and what isn’t.

Communicate, communicate, communicate

Most companies, as I stated above, are scared. They’re staring an unknown reality in the face.

Communication helps alleviate many of these fears.

So whether that means having email check-ins, conference call check-ins, or a weekly check-in at the office, find out what style of communication would help best. And use it.

What if none of these work and my company won’t agree to any terms?

Honestly, if you’re unhappy with it, they won’t work with you on it, and there’s nothing else you can do about it, it’s time to decide whether or not you want to stay at that company.

You have a choice.

You can start looking for other jobs, you can start your own business, you can start a side hustle, you can look for remote work jobs… There are many possibilities to what you can do.

So instead of asking “What can I do?” ask yourself “What do I WANT to do?”

The business environment is shifting and will shift eventually. This is the path of the modern-day (and the future of) the business world. But this is the time for employees to start asking for the shift to be more permanent.

It’s not a clear-cut road ahead. It’s still vastly unknown territory. However, we’ve seen what’s been possible over the past 2 years.

And I don’t know many people who are happily willing to go back to how it was before.
